Suspender touched, a recent collaboration between the artist duo Rob and Nick Carter and the artist and writer Colin Glen, investigates the sense of touch in relation to the visual. The image has been created by laying mattress springs onto cibachrome photographic paper and exposing it to a light source, Where the light cannot penetrate, shadows are formed allowing the object to create its own image.

This process, by which the physical presence of the object creates the image of its own absence, refers to photographys role in providing evidence of former existence. By extension, the use of bedsprings, which implies the physical contact of the supine body reminds us of our desire for photography to furnish us with evidence of the physical lived experience of our own bodies. The more subtle effects of photography which are produced through the photogram process are part of an ongoing interest in what Rob and Nick Carter describe as painting with light.

Their other work includes shining coloured lights directly on the paper to paint complex patterns and they have also recently enlarged tiny sections of paint to a scale which enhances the mediums sensuality.

Colin Glen is currently embarked on a project in which he makes meticulous pencil drawings of small sections of the bedsprings and other found objects with the aim of examining the relationship between the physical world of things and the inner world of memory.
